The Silicon Valley Computer Genealogy Group

(Join or renew)

The Silicon Valley Computer Genealogy Group (SVCGG) was named in 2004. The group formerly was called the Silicon Valley PAF Users Group (PAF is the acronym for the Personal Ancestral File, a family history software package; PAF 5 for Windows can be downloaded free of charge).

SVCGG is a nonprofit organization bringing together those interested in using computers for conducting family history research. Persons of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of expertise are welcome to participate. Clusters of family history enthusiasts around the world have formed about 150 users groups that focus on improving their use of PAF and other computer-based family history programs.

The Silicon Valley group, with some 600 members worldwide, is based in the San Francisco-San Jose, California, area known as Silicon Valley. Since the beginnings of the computer revolution, Silicon Valley has been the center of major developments and growth in the computer hardware and software industries.

Since its beginning, the Silicon Valley users group has been dedicated to improving the standards for family history research. We believe that genealogy work is too important to do carelessly and inaccurately. We want your efforts in family history to be useful for generations to come.

Since 1992, the Silicon Valley PAF Users Group has set the standard for documentation of family history sources. Now published in a completely revised second edition, the Family History Documentation Guidelines can help you find the best ways to identify and document the sources of information. We also have free tutorials and links to many valuable family history sites on the Web.

The group is not affiliated with any religious organization and welcomes members from all religious backgrounds. It also welcomes users of any family-history software package, and offers classes for Macintosh as well as Windows PC. We even have an occasional class for Unix users!
